Australian Anglicans Beware

It has been reported that TODAY the Diocese of Perth will consecrate its first female bishop, Kay Goldsworthy. Melbourne is in two weeks!

So for those who remain in the Anglican Church: when is enough enough?? No heritage, no matter how previous and beautiful, is worth this much!

  • I think it may have been in your company, Bob, that I first read that mock report of “the ordination of the first married lesbian bishop.” The rite was full of liturgical dance, and ‘come-as-you-are references’ but the part I recall most was the portrayal of two faithful Anglicans praying praying in a lonely corner of the cathedral. One was weeping as he prayed “How long oh Lord?” and the other was muttering to himself “One more thing, just ONE more thing and I’m outa this place!”

I doubt we will see a mass exodus. People have already bent their conscience to exist alongside all kinds of abhorant doctrines. Stay tuned for ‘floating bishops’, breakaway communions, a small shuffling of disgruntled people to other sections of the Titanic and whatever else helps people live with this latest absurdity. Until the next.

  • Peter,

Stay tuned for ‘floating bishops’, breakaway communions, a small shuffling of disgruntled people to other sections of the Titanic and whatever else helps people live with this latest absurdity.

All already a reality within Anglicanism. In the UK “floating bishops” have been the norm since 1992. I guess “disgruntled” people are Forward in Faith and the Continuum as a whole. Nothing new!

My issue, very simply, is that a method of doing theology that elevates conscience as the prime authority can lean to the left or the right! Anglicanism that “tolerates” Catholic-minded people but does not embrace a Catholic theological method (or, else they would all be Roman) can also embrace a liberal-minded Anglicanism. The breadth of Anglicanism is its death!
