Catechist’s library?
Our parish is using Fr John Corapi’s DVD series on the Catechism, The Teaching Of Jesus Christ, for a Thursday night study group. The series is solid in its teaching.
Yet I have some issues with the general idea of using DVDs (or media generally) for catechesis. For one, the DVDs seemed aged and very American. His style is a little grinding: someone suggested Father is trying to sound a little like Archbishop Sheen. But my issues is that people do not interact with the topic: watching a DVD is by nature passive and way too information based (cf: Spe Salvi: 2).
Not every parish has a skilled educated adult catechist available and these DVDs fill the gap. But rather than surrender to the situation, why is there not a movement towards educating laypeople to offer parish based catechesis for adults? I do not mean a diocesan institution that people can travel to but rather educated catechists that travel to parishes.
So I was wondering:
- What books should be in a Catechist’s library? (The Catechism is a given!)
- What files should be on a Catechist’s PDA?
- What files should on a Catechist’s computer?
