What does assist mean …
… in the context of obligation?
The kids asked me last night in the car how late one can be to Mass and still fulfill one’s obligation: the Gospel? the Offertory? the Eucharistic Prayer? Communion? And, I admit, I have no clue. (I am rather pedantic about being on time - or early - for everything so it is never an issue for us!)
So I wonder what assist means in the context of obligation? Before Vatican II one had to arrive before the Offertory - does that still stand? If someone can give a reference to the Code of Canon Law (or the like) that would be great.

Er… I have no reference, but I was told one had to arrive before the Gospel, and listen to it.
The Mass is fundamentally about uniting our intentions with those of the Priest; if we cannot do that, then our fulfilment of the obligation is in question anyway.
